Monitoring of the invasive species Aedes japonicus (Theobald, 1901) in Osijek-Baranya County between 2016 and 2021

Due to climate change and modern goods transport invasive mosquito species are rapidly spreading throughout Europe. One of the five spreading species is the species Aedes (Finlaya) japonicus. The presence of the species Aedes Japonicus was first recorded on the territory of the Republic of Croatia in September 2013 in Đurmanc and in the border crossing area in Macelj and it has been spreading to the east of Croatia. The Teaching Institute of Public Health for Osijek- Baranya County conducted monitoring of this invasive species as part of the monitoring of invasive mosquito species. For monitoring purposes, eggs were sampled using the oviposition trap method, which were later developed in laboratory conditions to the stage of an adult individual in developing vessels and adult individuals were extracted and determined to confirm the presence of the species. Sampling was carried out from 2016 to 2021 , in 24 stations and three micro- locations were selected at almost each location. Samples were collected by sampling dynamics between 7 and 14 days. The presence and spread of the species in the area of Osijek- Baranya County have been confirmed by this monitoring. The spread and increase in the number of individuals of this invasive species could become a public health concern, since these mosquitoes have the potential to become pests as well as the vector potentialfor mosquito- borne diseases.
