The Influence of Phenylenediamine Additions on the Synthesis of Polyaniline
The aim of this work is to establish the influence of of ortho-, meta- and para-phenylenediamine (OPDA, MPDA, PPDA) additions on the rate of polyaniline (PANI) synthesis, as well as on the mechanism of the polymerization, and on the characteristics of the resulting polymer. The synthesis was carried out by cyclic voltammetry from 0.1 M aniline solution in 1.0 M HCl and also with addition of OPDA, MPDA ; PPDA and orthoetoxyaniline (OEA). The working electrode was Pt-disc (A= 0.07 cm2) and the reference electrode was SCE The addition of PPDA, even at 1mM concentration, has a dramatic influence on the increase of PANI polymerization rate. The addition of 1mM level does not show any significant influence of MPDA, OPDA and OEA, but at 5mM additions slow down the PANI polymerization rate. The change in polymerization rate reflects also on the morphology of the resulting polymer, i.e. the slower is the polymerization rate the more dense morphology results. Also the catalytic effect is under the influence of the morphology, and the more dense is the morphology the catalytic rate (i.e. the catalytic current) is lower.
