Investigation and improving the environmental friendliness of fishing vessels through the network of fishermen and scientists
Energy efficiency and environmental performance of ships are key factors in marine sector. Introducing different technical and operative measures, focused on achieving higher environmental friendliness of vessels through emission reduction and fuel consumption monitoring, has increased the need for cooperation between industry and scientific institutions. The fishing industry has a long tradition, and even today the procedures are based on simple operations developed a long time ago. New regulations and environmental measures, which mostly concern the improvement of fishing operations, are often complex and require calculations to ensure sustainability, minimize operative costs and enhance marine protection. Fishermen have a lot of knowledge and skills in the operational part of fishing, but the application of alternative technologies requires detailed analysis and calculations that they cannot carry out by themselves. On the other hand, scientists assess the environmental influence of vessels at different levels of complexity and accuracy, obtaining technical data and assuming operative profiles, but they do not have the direct experience to qualitatively assess all the necessary parameters that affect the operational properties of vessels. In order to resolve the aforementioned shortcomings, cooperation between fishermen and scientists is highly important. During the cooperation, the fishermen provided data on fuel consumption in real-time, explained the problems they face while fishing and presented the difficulties they face when trying to apply new regulations. Scientists collected these problems and created a database that helped them during the analysis of fishing vessels and their environmental impact. The calculations explored numerous possibilities for the implementation of alternative technologies, which include new regulations and enable fishermen to make a profit. The initial phase of creating the network involved two universities, two fishing cooperatives and 12 vessels. With further work, efforts will be made to expand the network, in order to connect the entire fishing fleet of Croatia with its scientific institutions.
