Impact of Earthquake Trauma on Adolescents’ Mental Health During COVID‐19 pandemic
Over the past two years Croatian adolescents have been exposed to the double set of high intensity stressors: the COVID‐19 pandemic and the major earthquakes in March and December 2020. This study compared the mental health of 353 high school students (Mage= 14.78, SD = 0.468) during the pandemic (12/2021), with their peers in the pre‐ pandemic period (12/2016). Anxiety and self‐harm in adolescents were higher through the pandemic in comparison with their peers’ symptoms in the pre‐pandemic time. Adolescents whose families have suffered considerable damage from the earthquake in March 2020 reported higher levels of depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms, a higher incidence of self‐harm behaviours, lower life satisfaction and subjective well‐being even after 20 months post‐earthquake. Among them, females and adolescents from lower socio‐economic status families reported the highest levels of depression and anxiety symptoms and self‐harm behaviours. The findings about mental health problems of young people exposed to double jeopardy, the pandemic and the earthquake, will be discussed with the view on targeted prevention and intervention programs. Special attention will be given to the specific ethical challenges in research with adolescents regarding collective trauma and living in the prolonged COVID‐19 crisis. The study was funded by Croatian Science Foundation.
