Seasonality and diabetes
Without doubt, diabetes and climate changes are connected. Interaction of climate changes and seasonality on diabetes can be seen through direct impact on metabolism and metabolic processes of the body leading to higher incidence of diabetes, worse regulation of glicemia and worse outcomes of diabetes. Also, there is indirect connection through urbanization leading to sedentary lifestyle, increased consumption of processed foods, reduced availability of adequate nutrition etc. The term geoenvironmental diabetology is describing how events in the physical world affect those with diagnosed diabetes. Climate changes will, with their comprehensive consequences, weaken health care systems affecting also the treatment of diabetes. What can we, as physicians, do? We can call for an action by isolation of vulnerable groups, anticipating events and warning the public of climate changes that directly affect health. We have to engage actively as a physicians, a professionals with a reputation.
