SYNOVIAL FLUID CHARACTERISTICS OF OSTEOARTHRITIC STIFLE JOINT IN DOGS

Osteoarthritis is undoubtedly one of the most common joint diseases in dogs. We distinguish between primary and secondary. The latter is also much more frequent, resulting from numerous causes such as hip dysplasia or anterior cruciate ligament rupture. This degenerative disease is divided into 4 basic grades depending on the extent of changes affecting the joint, from the first to the fourth. The aim of this research was to determine 4 parameters of synovial fluid obtained by arthrocentesis of a stifle joint with a previously determined degree of osteoarthritis. 24 dogs of medium-sized breeds who were also patients of the Clinic for Surgery, Orthopedics and Ophthalmology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine University of Zagreb, participated in the research. Approval for this research was obtained from the Faculty Ethics Committee. They were divided into 4 groups depending on the X-ray-determined degree of osteoarthritis, and each group consisted of 6 dogs or synovial fluid samples. The physical characteristics were determined, namely volume and color, as well as the chemical accuracy of glucose and lactate. Physical analyses were performed immediately after knee puncture, while chemical analyses were performed at the Department of Pathophysiology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Zagreb. The results showed that an increase in the degree of osteoarthritis leads to an increase in the sample volume. The color of the samples varied from colorless, light yellow to red. A slightly darker yellow color was observed in certain samples belonging to the groups with 3rd and 4th degree osteoarthritis. At the same time, lighter shades of synovium were present mainly in samples with lower degrees. An increase in lactate concentration with an increase in the degree of osteoarthritis has also been proven. Glucose concentration, however, does not differ significantly between individual degrees of osteoarthritis. The results of the tested parameters in this study also confirm that with an increase in the degree of osteoarthritis of the stifle joint, there are also significant changes in the composition of the synovial fluid itself.
