Tanker Fleet Accidents and Oil Pollution
Oil pollution is one of the most detrimental types of pollution and poses serious threat to marine and coastal environment with long-term consequences for wildlife and human populations. The tankers have to comply with special maritime regulations depending on the quality and the quantity of cargo that carry, especially supertankers that are able to carry more than two million barrels of crude oil. Once when enters marine environment, crude oil from supertankers can cause long-lasting disastrous consequences for the whole ecosystem. Tanker accidents, such as collisions and groundings, caused numerous oil spills. Oil spills from tankers decreased significantly in recent years, but they still occur. This paper reviews the tanker fleet accidents that resulted in oil spills as well as the methods and procedures that implemented by International Maritime Organization for the purpose of prevention oil spills from tankers.
