Students’ Self-Assessement in Identifying Children Gifted in the Visual Arts
This research examined the self-assessments of students of Teacher Education and Early and Preschool Education at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Split in identifying children gifted in the visual arts. The results show that students recognize the importance of identifying artistically gifted children and think they can easily identify them. Students are highly motivated to work with the gifted and would like to attend an elective course on gifted children. Students learned the most about artistically gifted children in courses in teaching methodology and pedagogy, but a large part of students (41.70%) think they have only moderate knowledge of working with artistically gifted children, while only 14.60% of them believe they know how to work with the gifted. Students only moderately recognize prejudices related to artistically gifted children and somewhat better recognize the characteristics of the artistically gifted from the identification lists created to recognize artistic giftedness.
