Synthesis of new cationic amphiphiles with antimicrobial activities

Cationic surfactants, such as pyridinium, benzimidazolium and imidazolium salts, have excellent biocidal activities against broad spectrum of bacteria and fungi. A series of new cationic amphiphiles of imidazolium and benzimidazolium with antimicrobial activities for potential development of new disinfectants and sanitizers were synthesized. Imidazolium and benzimidazolium ionic liquids containing long apolar alkyl and polyalkyl chains and different anionic part were prepared in the form of quaternary salts. Using one-step procedure, salts with an alkyl/dialkyl N-substituents and Br/large inorganic anions counter anions were prepared in good yields. New imidazolium and benzimidazolium based ionic liquids were characterized by FT-IR, NMR and LC-MS. Their chemical and spectral properties were discussed. The dependence of the antimicrobial activity on number of chains, chain length and anion will be determined in near future.
