Are you mostly sedentary? Do not mind; mind your physical activity mindset
Modern lifestyle, consequent adverse effects of physical inactivity, and constant promotion of the importance of physical activity pose scientific questions on the role of set o beliefs in the relationship between PA and psychological well- being. To test this question, we designed a study that comprised sedentary and non-sedentary adults, their set of beliefs on their PA and the beneficial effect of PA on their psychological health, and their satisfaction with life, health, physical appearance and general happiness. A total of 534 male late adolescents and adults, non-sedentary (N = 141) and predominantly sedentary (N = 393), took part in the study (Mage = 28.61 (9.35) ; Nfemale = 344). Participants answered whether they consider themselves generally physically active (yes/no), and answered questions on life, health, and physical appearance satisfaction on a scale from 0 to 10 (with a larger number indicating more satisfaction) and question on their beliefs on the effect of PA on their psychological health on a scale from 0 to 7 (with larger number indication beliefs on the more substantial impact of PA). Based on the distribution of the data on the question on beliefs on the effect of PA, we categorized participants into groups with lower, middle, and firmer beliefs on the positive effect of PA on psychological health. The results of three-way ANOVAs showed higher life satisfaction, health, and physical appearance and higher general happiness in sedentary participants only if they perceived themselves as physically active and had firmer beliefs on the beneficial effects of PA on their psychological health. On the other hand, non- sedentary participants whose beliefs on the beneficial effects of PA on their psychological health indicated higher life, health, and physical appearance satisfaction, regardless of their perception of themselves as physically active or nonactive.
