Linguistic diversity in the context of multilingual education: a case study of bilingual families in Germany and Austria
Languages determine the identity of each individual, but they are also part of our common heritage. They connect us with other peoples and cultures and contribute to mutual understanding and a common sense of European identity. Today, the EU has three alphabets and 24 official languages. Linguistic diversity is incorporated in Article 22 of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union. One of its fundamental principles is respect for the rights of members of minorities. The Charter prohibits their discrimination and requires respect for cultural, religious and linguistic diversity throughout the Union. The Commission ensures that when implementing EU law, fundamental rights are respected, including the right to non- discrimination. Many levels of intermediate language are gone through before learners have a good command of the language. Interference continues to decrease as learning goes on, but most foreign language learners never reach the level of native speakers. In summary, it can be said that interference occurs in the speech of foreign language learners as well as those of bilingual speakers.
