Influence of forest plantations on soil nutrients in the area of the Đurđevac sands

At the end of the 19th century, the calming of Đurđevac sands began with work on the reforestation with Scots pine (Pinus sylverstris L.), black pine (Pinus nigra Arnold) and acacia (Robinia pseudoacacia L.). The objective of this study was to determine the content of nutrients on the soil samples with Mehlich III extraction solution, collected in plantations of Scots pine, black pine and acacia and to compare the results with control plots without a forest vegetation. Soil samples to a depth of 1 m was collected at 3 sites with 5 repetitions (15 samples each) in Scots pine, black pine, and acacia plantations, as well as in control plots in the Đurđevac sands geographical-botanical reserve. At the control plots there have been measured statistically significantly higher soil pH-values in relation to the plantations of Scots pine, black pine and acacia, but the variability is also significantly higher. With the increase in the depth, pH-values on all researched plots is increasing. The highest P and K contents are in acacia plantations, and the smallest are on control plots. Ca and Mg contents did not differ significantly in comparison to the control plots. Control plots have the smallest S content at all the soil depths. The contents of micronutrients (Fe, Mn) are statistically significantly higher in plantations in comparison to the control plots. Generally, the largest contents of the nutrients are in acacia plantations, while the smallest on control plots without forest vegetation where found. According to the results of these studies, the status of nutrients is more favourable for the plantations of acacia in relation to the cultures of Scots pine and black pine.
