Patients attitudes towards antipsychotic medication: a cross-sectional study

lntroduction: Schizophrenia is a serious mental illness that requires the use of pharmacotherapy. Antipsychotics, as a firstline schizophrenia treatment, can often lead to a variety of adverse drug reactions, which can affect patient adherence. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the satisfaction with treatment in patients with schizophrenia and the frequency of drug adverse reactions. Materials and methods: The study was organised as a cross-sectional, and the sample consisted of patients from the Institute for Psychotic Disorders of Women, Clinic for Psychiatry Vrapče. We used Drug Attitude Inventory (DAI-10) scale to assess patients attitudes towards their medication. Results: In total, 55 women participated in our study. Their mean age was 49 Years, with standard deviation of 10 Years. Half of the study participants used first Generation antipsychotic drug and 47.2 % of all participants experienced adverse drug reaction. Only one participant, which accounts for 1.9%, reported the experienced adverse drug reaction to the authority. Patients attitudes mean score was 6.79 (1.47) which reflects positive attitude towards pharmacotherapy. Conclusions: Our results showed positive attitudes of schizophrenic patients towards the use of antipsychotics. However, frequency of adverse drug reaction reporting practice is very low in this group of patients and health care professionals should address this concern.
