Education at the crossroads between ethnocetricity and interculturality
Multiculturalism is Europe’ s reality. European countries become every day more and more diverse as a result of constant immigrations as well as economic and political factors. Debates on multiculturalism open many questions. The following are considered to be significant: Does multiculturalism mean the abandoning of traditional western values such as individual freedom and tolerance? Does the politics of favouring the inclusiveness of various cultures solve the problem of cultural exclusiveness?... There are differences in conceptualisation of the term multicultural education. In spite of that, however, their common denominator is the progressive approach in the transformation of education in order to form a complete, critical approach and overcome sidetracks of discrimination in education. Multicultural education is based on the idea of social justice, educational equality and the application of educational experience in order to enrich students’ potentials on a local, national and global level.
