Application of Modern Technologies (GIS, GPS, ..) in Making Methodological Studies on the Primary Opening of Hilly-Mountain Forests

Optimising forest road network represents a very complex procedure during which a great number of information has to be analysed and processed. For this purpose, the aid of personal computers in combination with GIS, GPS and adequate computer programme packages is immeasurable. The whole procedure of forest opening has been worked out through seven stages of optimisation: designing computer database, the analysis of the existing forest road network, determining routes of the future forest roads, the analysis of locations of the future forest roads and achieving the desired openness, optimising forest road network regarding the height route development, cost calculation and making a data flowchart of the optimising procedure of the forest road network as the basis for creating computer programme. Researches were carried out in the management units Lisina and Veprinačke managed by the Forest administration Opatija. The methodological study of opening has been made in four versions. The first version represents the quality improvement of the existing forest traffic infrastructure network. In the second, third and the fourth version the zero condition in that area was simulated since it should have tried to answer the question whether the opening of the forest road area in the past was really done in the best possible way. The comparative analysis was made among variants.
