A simplified formulation of the energy efficiency index for purse seiners

Emission reduction has been comprehensively addressed in maritime sciences. Previous work focused on decarbonisation and implementing technical and operational measures to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. The environmental impact of fishing vessels has been commonly neglected, while new legislation and general trends require an implementation of measures to reduce global warming. Fishing vessels are generally powered by low-efficient diesel engines characterized by high CO2 indexes. The obsolescence of fishing fleets makes it difficult to integrate new technologies and alternative fuels into the existing system without the necessary analysis and calculations that provide insight into the effectiveness of such procedures. Decarbonisation of the fishing sector also has an important social aspect since most vessels operate in coastal waters and affect the living conditions of the population. This study attempts to connect fishermen and researchers to improve the environmental suitability of the Croatian fishing fleet operating in the Adriatic Sea. The possibilities of CO2 emission reduction were studied for ten fishing vessels of the Croatian fishing fleet, which are characterized by various technical characteristics. The relevant data acquired during the period of five years were used to calculate the CO2 index of diesel-powered vessels. The carbon footprint of fishing vessels proved to be dependent on the type of caught fish. Considering the type of fish, the calculated CO2 index of two purse seiners was compared and an insight into their relative environmental impact was outlined.
