Concept phase design of LNG tank and fuel supply system on dual-fueled ships Helena

In order to reduce harmful gas fuel emissions, LNG is increasingly used as a fuel in the maritime industry. Due to a rising demand for dual-fueled ships, the goal of this paper is to provide an optimal concept phase solution for such vessels. The research is divided into two parts. The first part of the research is the optimal design of the LNG fuel tank type C, constrained by the available space and prescribed cryogenic conditions. LNG fuel tank type C must withstand static and dynamic loads during the service and prevent excessive evaporation of LNG due to heat transfer. The tank consists of the inner and outer tank with vacuum-perlite insulation. Calculation is made for three different diameters of the inner tank, varying the thickness of insulation while the outer tank radius remains constant. Inner tank is designed for lower and higher vapor pressure. The second part of the research is the optimal design of the LNG fuel gas supply system. During ship exploitation, fuel requirements significantly vary based on various modes of operation. Therefore, analysis under realistic ship operating condition profiles is required to assess system characteristics. Furthermore, the comparison of different configurations of the fuel gas supply system from the LNG fuel tank to the propulsion system is made. The system must fulfil requirements in all modes of the ship operation. Analysed configurations of fuel gas supply systems differ by type, quantity, and size of used components. Based on the conducted analysis, the optimal structure of LNG fuel tank type C and the optimal fuel gas supply system solution, to satisfy all the requirements of ship operability, can be selected. Results of this research may provide an important contribution to the methodology of concept phase design for LNG dual-fueled ships.
