How suitable are Mediterranean intermittent rivers as mayfly habitats?

Intermittent rivers are dynamic habitats that periodically cease to flow. They are common in arid regions of the world, where they represent an important source of water. Mayflies (Ephemeroptera) are often among the most abundant groups of aquatic macroinvertebrates in freshwater habitats. Due to their high sensitivity to habitat alterations, they are used in bio-monitoring programs worldwide. Nevertheless, their diversity and ecology in the Mediterranean intermittent habitats are still poorly known. Therefore, we investigated mayfly assemblages in the lotic phase of four karst intermittent rivers in the Mediterranean region of Croatia. A total of 12 recorded species can be considered as relatively high species richness in such harsh environments. Since the studied rivers differed in morphology, vegetation structure, and the level of anthropogenic impact, they also supported different mayfly assemblages. Our results also show which abiotic factors are most responsible for shaping mayfly assemblages in intermittent rivers in the Mediterranean. Thus, they could contribute to the development of 69 conservation measures for Mediterranean intermittent freshwater habitats and the mayfly species they support.
