Efficient algorithms for evaluation of the steel hull process

Algorithms make our daily life and work much easier than before. Computers solve these step-by- step instructions faster than a human can and open new opportunities for designing and monitoring production facilities. The steel hull process supplies the whole ship production process with the necessary steel parts for the hull. It is, therefore, very important to enable the shipyard management and the ship design office with efficient and reliable mathematical tools capable of evaluating the key performance indicators of the production process. Therefore, we briefly present two mathematical models to describe the splitting production lines: the analytical approach and the finite state method. Some of the most important key performance indicators, like the production rate, the work-in-process, the probability of blockage, and the probability of starvation will be presented. These mathematical models will be compared in a theoretical case including five machines and four buffers. Also, a numerical approach is employed to simulate the steel hull process in a shipyard. Such efforts are expected to enhance the negotiating position of a shipyard through a more reliable definition of production dynamics as well as through rational planning of production activities.
