Numerical analysis of the Middle Miocene Panopea bivalves (geoducks) from the southwestern margin of the Central Paratethys, Croatia

Here presented numerical analysis shows a variety of shell morphologies of the genus Panopea, based on the geoduck samples from the Middle Miocene (Badenian) deposits of Northern Croatia (southwestern margin of the Central Paratethys), previously considered as different species/subspecies. Specimens were measured, analyzed using PAST software, and data were compared with the available measurements from earlier studies. Results showed consistency with the comparative material. Despite the shape varieties, which are also present in the studied geoducks, they are all considered as ecotypes of the morphologically variable species Panopea (Panopea) menardi (Deshayes, 1828).
