Child Centered Parenting in the Digital World
In the last decade, the digital world has become not only the children's playground but also a place for their education, socialization, growth, and development. Children around the world start using different digital devices like smartphones and tablets from a very young age. They amerce themselves in various digital content they find fun, interesting, and captivating. Numerous studies have shown the benefits of children using digital media like learning foreign languages, seeking information, having fun and easier learning with interactive content, developing problem-solving skills, etc. Recent research has also shown that there are a lot of negative effects of children's digital media overuse like sleeping problems, less physical activity, aggressive behavior, etc. However, the digital world is important for children because they find it fun, and diving into it makes them happy. The question is how should parents go about the needs and interests of children in the digital world in a way they do not experience its negative effects. The ideal is to support their interests and creativity, but navigate, and mediate them in the digital world. In this presentation we will discuss the children's perspective on the digital world, issues and problems parents encounter when it comes to children's digital media use, and present some recommendations for child-centered parenting in the digital world.
