Changes in discharge regimes of rivers in Hrvatsko Zagorje region (Croatia) in 1961-2020 period

Hrvatsko zagorje is a traditional region in the northwest of Croatia, in the Sava-Drava interfluve, between the border river Sutla and Macelj mountain in the west and northwest and Kalnik and Medvednica mountains in the east and southeast. The investigated area consists almost entirely of three river basins, those of Sutla, Krapina and Bednja rivers. Although there are about 20 hydrological stations in the region, for the purposes of analysis only those stations were selected that had a correspondingly long series of homogeneous data with as few interruptions as possible in the period 1961-2020. Consequently Zelenjak station on the river Sutla, Kupljenovo on Krapina and Željeznica on Bednja were selected. The changes of discharge regimes were analyzed by comparing data from the last climatologically standard period 1991-2020 with data from the previous climatological standard period 1961-1990. The investigated area is characterized by the Peripannonian pluvial-nival regime type (according to the typology of Čanjevac, 2013), which has not changed, but in two consecutive 30-year standard periods, the redistribution of discharge during the year was determined. There is generally an increase in monthly modul coefficients in autumn and winter and a decrease in spring and summer. These changes are probably influenced by the increase in mean monthly air temperatures and also by the redistribution of monthly precipitation in the study area, but further research is needed to determine how strong these cause-and-effect relationships are.
