If I see my partner as humble, will I forget about myself? A dyadic study on the association between perceived partner humility and unmitigated communion
Perceived partner humility is a relational virtue (Davis et al., 2011). Humble individuals are perceived as having a more accurate view of self, being more other-oriented, and more modest in their self-presentation, as well as being forgiving, helpful and generous (Mehulić i Kamenov, submitted). Perceiving the partner as such makes people more committed to and satisfied with their romantic relationships (Dwiwardani et al., 2018). Would perceiving the partner as humble make one prioritize their needs to the exclusion of own? Self-reported humility has been associated with unmitigated communion (Peters et al., 2011), however not much is known about the association between perceived partner humility and own unmitigated communion. The aim of our study was to investigate the effect of perceived partner humility on one’s own unmitigated communion of both men and women in dating relationships. 641 Croatian dating couples (age range 20-39 years ; average relationship duration 3 years) completed an online questionnaire. Dyadic path analysis was conducted within the APIM framework (Kashy & Kenny, 2000). For both men and women, both actor and partner effects were found. Perceiving the partner as more humble was associated with higher own and partner’s unmitigated communion. Both the actor and the partner effect were stronger for men than women. These findings could be explained by gender roles theories and different expectations of men and women in intimate relationships.
