Quo vadis, moral education?
This paper offers a review of literature on moral and character education and moral competence development. Firstly, these approaches are considered in the context of slow pedagogy and contemporary learning and teaching strategies. Secondly, the importance of dialogue and cooperation in one’s moral development is argued from the point of the development of meaningful relations. Thirdly, a supportive social environment is emphasized as a valuable factor in the above-mentioned processes and the role of teacher in one’s moral development is discussed from the point of the ‘living values’ and creative reflective practice. Lastly, the emphasis is given to the importance of (self)upbringing, (inter)action and (self)reflection in one’s moral development and his/her self-realization. The paper aims to contribute to an understanding of different approaches to moral education and to creative insight into its possible future directions.
