Strategic guidelines for the emission management as a part of the decarbonization of the natural gas sector in countries with domestic gas production
The strategic guidelines for the natural gas industry have been implemented based on the general objectives of the energy strategy without the implementation of the low-carbon development guidelines. Influenced by the European Green Agreement and a strong change of direction towards a zero-carbon society, companies are trying to individually follow the energy transition map and implement some of the measures for environmentally sustainable development. The different international organizations dealing with gas or energy markets usually analyze possible recommendations for energy transition, but on a general level or only for a very specific part of the gas sector. The aim of the paper was to analyze the natural gas sector in order to propose strategic guidelines for its decarbonization. The main hypothesis was that analyzing existing technologies and technological solutions, as well as defined strategic guidelines for reducing emissions, will enable the development of better decarbonization measures in the gas industry, which will help to strengthen low-carbon development even more. This was done to propose strategic guidelines for different parts of the gas sector. As a result of the analysis, strategic guidelines for the development of business strategies were proposed: for natural gas production, the implementation of Geo sequestration and biogas production ; for gas transportation and storage, the increase of hydrogen content ; the introduction of smart metering in the natural gas distribution sector ; and the increased use of liquefied natural gas in the heavy road and marine transportation. The conclusion provides an overview of the strategic guidelines for the natural gas sector that the state administration should implement in low-carbon energy plans, but also companies in their research and development programs.
