Functional late results of malleolar fractures
This paper analyses late results of treatment of patients with malleolar fractures operated at the Surgical Clinic of the School of Medicine in Zagreb, during seven years. 147 patients were analyzed. 79 patients (34, 6%) were available for follow-up check ups, carried out at least one year after the treatment. The majority of patients had B-type (24, 7%) and C-type (xx%) fractures and the minority of them had A-type fractures according to the Weber's classification. One year after the treatment functional measurement of ankle joints were carried out and their motion and circumference were statistically compared with the healthy leg. This paper points out the significance of osteosynthesis methods and possibilities available in the treatment of patients with ankle fractures. Mobility in B-type and especially in C-type is statistically significant, while a certain percentage is shown in increased circumference, pain with weather changes, and posttraumatic arthritic changes in ankle joints. The conclusion is that the early operation, anatomic reduction, good fixation and early beginning of rehabilitation are the most important issues.
