Determining the density of historical fabrics using the gray line profile method
A standard practice in textile industry is to manually and visually measure yarn density, i.e. the number of warp and weft yarns per unit length. Conventional methods of measurement require actions which are very time-consuming and demanding for the eyes of the textile analyst. In this paper the accuracy, efficiency and the limit of the gray line-profile method are investigated and compared with the conventional method. The distance between two adjacent yarns is the information required to automatically determine the density of the fabric. Image analysis is known to be an effective method of detecting woven yarn density. Twelve samples of historical woven fabrics consisting of basic weave structures and different warp and weft densities have been tested. Results show that there is a high correlation between values obtained from gray line-profile method and conventional methods and that the new method could adequately replace manual analysis.
