Environmental Management in Tourism

Environmental management is a process that industries, companies, and individuals take to regulate and protect the health of the natural world. In most cases, this does not actually involve managing the environment itself, but rather a process of taking steps and promoting behaviour that will have a positive impact on the way environmental resources are used and protected. Organizations deal with environmental management for several different reasons, but caring for the natural world, respecting local laws and conservation rules, and saving money are usually at the top of most lists. This textbook is intended for students of the Polytechnic in Šibenik who are taking classes in the Environmental Management in Tourism course in English as part of the Erasmus+ program. Studying the content of this course, students will acquire the following learning outcomes: • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of course content by defining and describing basic concepts in ecology and environmental protection. • Analyse and compare the relationship between man and environment in the contemporary context of tourism and society development in general. • Set an example and interpret the impact of tourism on natural ecosystems and environmental components (air, water and sea, soil, flora, and fauna). • Use measures to reduce the negative impacts of tourism on the environment. • Comment and critically evaluate the actions of tourism stakeholders as well as responsible experts in accordance with the principles of sustainability and responsibility. • Use materials and tools to search scientific and professional literature in their native and English languages. • Present the acquired knowledge, ideas, problems, and solutions independently and in a team. The goal of writing this textbook was to provide students with theoretical knowledge and case studies in order to be able to: understand the principles of natural resource management in general and tourism in particular, understand the problems in their own environment (in the tourism sector and/or in the work environment) so that they could independently manage the environment in a way that minimally affects the state and components of the environment in terms of sustainable development, learn to recognize the damage that stakeholders of tourism or business systems can cause to natural ecosystems, and to apply the learned content of this course in business practice. The content of this textbook is presented through 14 chapters: 1. Ecology and environmental protection. Fundamental ecological principles. 2. Man and the environment. Tourism and the environment. Contemporary environmental problems. 3. Sustainable development. Global Sustainable Development Goals. 4. Urbanization. Environmental consequences of urbanization. Spatial planning. Urban tourism. 5. Demographic expansion. The consequences of demographic expansion on the environment. 6. Agriculture and environmental pollution. Agribusiness and agritourism. Rural tourism. 7. Industry and Environmental Pollution. Energy requirements. Energy efficiency in the tourism sector. 8. Waste management. Circular economy. 9. Development of transport and transport infrastructure and their environmental impact. Noise in the environment. Light pollution. Connection: environment-traffic-tourism. 10. Environmental Components: Air. Climate change, global warming, greenhouse effect, ozone depletion. Mountain tourism. 11. Environmental Components: Water. Water Consumption and Pollution. The role of water in tourism. 12. Environmental components: Sea. Coastal degradation and impact on marine ecosystems. Nautical tourism. 13. Environmental components: Soil. We are living in a time of accelerated changes, driven by economic and technological development on the one hand, and on the other hand, with great threats to human health and the health of the environment as a whole, therefore the main goal of this textbook is for readers to understand the problems of their environment from the perspective of a student and citizen, so that they can bring their own decisions.
