Possibilities of using the assistive technology in the educational process: Digital tools in the role of assistive technology

Assistive technology includes any item, piece of equipment, or product systems, whether acquired commercially, modified, or customized that is used to increase, maintain, or improve functional capabilities of individuals with disability or an elderly person (ATIA, 2022). Digital tools used for teaching and learning include hardware (laptops, mobile devices), software (applications, extensions) and technology-based online environments (websites, learning management systems). These tools deliver resources to reach, teach, and engage learners (Rao, Torres and Smith, 2021). With assistive technology features becoming available on digital devices and tools, teachers can make use of it in inclusive settings to teach students with or without disabilities. For students with disabilities, it is essential to consider and use assistive technology as part of a student's individualized educational plan (IEP) (Ok and Rao, 2019).
