Modelling of Pitting Phenomena on gear tooth flank by Phase-field method
One of the most used driving elements for power and motion transmission are gears. In general, gear teeth in gear mesh are subjected to rolling- sliding contact in elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) conditions. Due to rolling-sliding contact, after a certain number of cycles, different types of fatigue damage mechanisms occur, such as pitting, tooth root fatigue and wearing. Experimental study has shown that the pitting process is statistically the most common gear fatigue process [1]. Current methods of numerical modelling of the pitting prediction on the gear tooth flank have not been yet efficiently solved. Hence, the objective of this research is development of a novel computational framework for assessment of a gear lifetime until pitting formation on a gear tooth flank. The load distribution as a consequence of a contact pressure distribution was obtained by EHL theory [2], while phase-field approach is used to describe modelling of the damage behaviour, by introducing an additional variable, which separates damaged material from the undamaged [3].
