Mechanical properties of flax fibres/epoxy composites for marine application
One of the critical concerns regarding the acceptance of flax fibres/polymer composites for marine application, as an alternative to those reinforced with glass fibres (GFRP), are their mechanical properties. A good impregnation of fibres and adhesion between components are necessary for the load transfer from matrix to fibres. Epoxy based composites with 4 to 10 layers of flax fibres are prepared by means of vacuum infusion. The fibres fracture was above 40 m%. Samples are cut by means of a water jet. Mechanical properties under tensile and flexural load were tested and compared to those determined by Croatian Registry of Shipping (CRS) for GFRP. The composites had excellent tensile modulus and strength and flexural strength ; however apparent interlaminar shear strength and flexural strength were slightly lower than those given by the CRS. Possible solutions are either to reduce the fibres fracture to improve the impregnation or to hybridise the composites with glass fibres close to the top and bottom surfaces, where the flexural stress is the highest.
