Ethnic Plurality and Education: The Croatian Case
The paper is based on the research on the changes in the educational approach to cultural diversity in nationally/ethnically and culturally plural Croatian society during the 19th and 20th century. In spite of substantial changes in the political and ideological framework plurality in the education policy remains during all that period of time. Apart from the conclusions concerning social origins of the changes in the regulation of ethnic differences in Croatian educational system, the aim of the paper is to discuss and/or to open the discussion on the following topics: Why did some countries develop the ethnic and cultural plurality in education during the period predominately characterised by the modernisation pattern of national homogenisation? Under which circumstances and in which forms did this plurality occur? Is it possible to learn from these experiences and use that knowledge in the construction of the European citizenship and social cohesion through education? What was and what will be the role of intercultural education? What would be the role and the limits of education in preparing for living together within ethnic and the cultural diversities?
