Carbon Footprint of Hydrogen Produced within the Electrolyser Plant: A Case Study in Croatia

The study considers the production of hydrogen by electrolysis of water using exclusively electricity from renewable energy sources, which is used either as fuel for cars and buses, or in the case when the demand for hydrogen is less than production, so the excess of produced green hydrogen would be used in the production process of the local oil refinery in the Republic of Croatia. In this way, the produced hydrogen reduces carbon dioxide emissions in the transport sector in Croatia and/or in the considered local oil refinery process. The carbon footprint of hydrogen produced within the electrolyser plant was calculated here throughout its entire lifecycle. Each kg of such (green) hydrogen used to power city buses instead of diesel would reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 16.3 kg, while in case when is used to power cars instead of gasoline would reduce them by 26.7 kg. If such (green) hydrogen is used as a replacement for the (grey) hydrogen produced through steam methane reforming of natural gas in the refinery, it would reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 20.8 kg per each kg of hydrogen.
