The influence of numerical parameters on the total resistance of a container ship
For the accurate prediction of the total resistance using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), it is very important to assess numerical and modelling errors. In this paper, the influence of numerical parameters on the total resistance and wave patterns is investigated, including time step, turbulence model, and discretization schemes for spatial and temporal discretization. Full-scale numerical simulations of the flow around a post-Panamax container ship are carried out. The numerical model is based on Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations discretized using the Finite Volume Method (FVM). The Volume of Fluid (VOF) method is used for tracking and locating the free surface within the numerical simulations. The Grid Convergence Index (GCI) method is used for verification purposes of time step and grid resolution. Trim and sinkage data are presented as well as the influence of numerical parameters on wave elevations and total resistance.
