Spray/wall interaction modeling of biodiesel blends
Biofuels are expected to play a crucial role in transition toward green energy. Blending biodiesel with conventional diesel is already obligatory in European Union. Currently 7 % biodiesel is present in the mixture, however, with new directives, 20 % biodiesel is expected to be prescribed. In this study, spray/wall interactions of pure diesel, pure biodiesel, 7 % and 20 % biodiesel fuels blends are investigated numerically, with biodiesel originating from coffee beans. The spray characteristics are evaluated by considering secondary droplet sizes, spray composition, spray radial spread and liquid film thickness. Beneficial effects of blending biodiesel with diesel such as lower Sauter mean diameter, larger radial spread, and increased splashing probability were observed. However, a significant increase in deposited liquid film was also observed, with pure biodiesel film being twice as thick as that of pure diesel. The obtained results can serve as the basis for assessment of emissions during combustion of coffee-based biodiesel.
