Challenges in model updating of cultural heritage structures

Cultural heritage buildings have a high architectural value, and their maintenance and rehabilitation require special attention and approach. This is most often achieved by performing a non-destructive test such as dynamic testing of structure, i.e., operational modal analysis (OMA). In addition to the non-destructive testing, numerical structural analysis is also performed. The developed numerical model may not always reflect the real structural behavior due to the errors and assumptions during the modelling. The operational modal analysis is most often combined with the numerical model to solve this problem. The numerical model is updated using this combination based on the result obtained by performing the operational modal analysis. This can serve as a base for a valuable source of information. The obtained numerical model can be used for different purposes such as establishing structural health monitoring (SHM), damage detection, structural life prediction, determination of optimal maintenance strategy, etc. In this paper, such a combination of the numerical model and operational modal analysis results is used to perform the model updating of the simple and complex numerical model. As a part of the experimental investigation of st. James Cathedral in Šibenik (Croatia) dynamic parameters of the tie rods (simple model) and Cathedral were determined. After that, the initial numerical models for both tie rods and Cathedral were developed. Based on comparison with the experimentally obtained results, the model updating was performed to estimate the axial forces in tie rods and to update the numerical model of the Cathedral. Based on the results, it was shown that combining the analysis of local and global structural models, experimentally obtained dynamic parameters, and finite element model updating (FEMU) is a viable solution for the maintenance, repair, and rehabilitation of cultural heritage buildings.
