Aggressive sinonasal seromucinous carcinoma in a dog
Introduction: Accurately diagnosing sinus and nasal cavity masses is challenging. We report a case of aggressive sinonasal carcinoma in a 5 year old male Labrador Retriever who presented with clinical signs of painful swelling dorsally of the left eye. Materials and Methods: The X-ray (ventrodorsal view) of the skull showed a sharply demarcated mass, 2.5 x 2.2 cm in size, located intranasally, with mild osteolythic septal defects. However, the CT scan revealed a naso-frontal infiltrative mass with left exophthalmos and multifocal frontal osteolysis. The left frontal bone was biopsied. Histopathology showed proliferation of fibro osseous tissue. After 3 months the dog re- presented with progression of clinical signs. However, histopathological and cytological analysis of sinus mass showed pyogranulomatous inflammation. Due to extensive skull deformity and inappetence the dog was euthanized and necropsy was performed. Results: Macroscopic findings included marked deformity of frontal region of the skull with severe irregular expansion of both frontal sinuses, thinning and lysis of the bone with the formation of holes. Sinus and nasal cavity were filled with a gelatinous dark red mass. Histopathological finding corresponded to an inflamed sinonasal seromucinous carcinoma. Immunohistochemically, neoplastic cells stained positively for cytokeratin. Metastases to other organs were not found. Conclusions: Sinonasal tumours in dogs are rare, and to our knowledge, a variant of aggressive seromucinous carcinoma has not been described in dogs. This case confirms the low diagnostic yield of a sinonasal biopsy and that larger or more specimens should be collected for histopathological analysis.
