Propeller retrofit on a fishing vessel: Self-propulsion CFD simulations with existing and new propeller
Reduction of fuel consumption and environmental footprint of all types of ships belong to the category of very actual and important research topics in marine sector. This is also the true for fishing vessels, particularly bearing in mind recent fluctuations in fuel prices globally. Croatian fishing fleet mainly includes trawlers and purse seiners, which are regularly aged vessels with relatively low energy efficient power systems. Therefore, number of research projects is being conducted in order to increase energy efficiency and environmental friendliness of fishing vessels in the Adriatic Sea, where variety of technical and operational measures are being investigated considering technical, economic and social aspects. This paper deals with self- propulsion CFD simulation of a fishing trawler with existing propeller and newly designed one for its retrofitting. Preliminary investigations of ship in operation indicated that its 3-bladed propeller represents a weak point in the propulsion system, and installation of new 4- bladed propeller with modern geometry has been proposed. To assess the quality of the new propeller design, hull CAD model is created from the section plan drawings and simulated with the old and new propeller geometry. CAD model of the old propeller is produced from the 3D scan data. Self-propulsion simulations are performed in CFD for two conditions: de-sign speed and trawling condition. According to the results, the power delivered to the propeller is moderately decreased showing the new propeller design to be beneficial.
