Effect of ash application on some chemical soil properties under the energy crop Miscanthus x giganteus

Biomass combustion produces large amounts of ash that must be disposed of and recycled in environmentally acceptable manner. Due to its chemical composition, biomass ash has great potential to be used as a soil conditioner. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the influence of different ash doses (0, 2 and 5 t/ha) on soil reaction (pH), carbonate content (CaCO3), plant available phosphorus (P2O5) and potassium (K2O) content in soil under the energy crop Miscanthus x giganteus. The study was conducted in 2020 at the experimental station "Šašinovec" of the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Agriculture. The conducted study showed that the application of ash had no significant effect on soil pH, but had on carbonate, plant available phosphorus and potassium content in the soil. The application of both studied ash doses had a significant effect on increasing the carbonate content and decreasing the plant available phosphorus in the soil. The content of plant available potassium in the soil increased significantly only at the variant where higher ash dose was applied, while the application of lower ash dose had no significant effect. Under the studied agroecological conditions, ash proved to be a good soil conditioner in terms of carbonate and plant available potassium content in the soil under the energy crop Miscanthus x giganteus.
