Football coaches’ self-assessments and young football players’ assessments of coaches’ emotional competence: a correlational research

Emotional competence is a construct of research interest in both psychological and pedagogical science. An emotionally competent person is one who successfully perceives, understands, expresses, recognizes and regulates emotions. Although emotional competence is important for every aspect of pedagogical work, including the work of a coach, it has not been sufficiently researched in a sports context. Having that in mind, the aim of the present study was to examine football coaches’ emotional competence based on their self-assessments and assessments of young football players as their trainees. The correlational research was conducted in 2020 in one large football club in Republic of Croatia, on a sample of 9 coaches and 151 young football players. Two general data questionnaires were used, one for gathering data on coaches’ age, length of coaching, level of education and age category they train and the other for gathering data on players’ age, length of training and training category they belong. The coaches and young football players also completed the Emotional Skills and Competence Questionnaire (ESCQ-45, Takšić, 2002). The results showed that the coaches assessed themselves as highly emotionally competent. There was no statistically significant correlation between the coaches’ self- assessments of emotional competence, their age, length of training experience, level of education and age category they train. Young football players also highly assessed their coaches’ emotional competence, but there was no statistically significant correlation between coaches’ self-assessments and assessments of coaches’ emotional competence made by young football players. Negative correlation was found between young players’ assessments of coaches’ emotional competence and their age and length of training. Implications of the results were discussed with the emphasis on the importance and benefits of the coaches’ emotional intelligence in training young players.
