Seakeeping assessment of a floating object with installed photovoltaic system

Photovoltaic solar systems are increasingly used on merchant ships. Standalone floating photovoltaic systems designed exclusively to produce electricity for general purposes are being developed. The usual way to estimate incoming solar radiation assumes a fixed exposed surface. In the case of application on floating objects at sea, incident waves cause a different relative position of the exposed surface in relation to the sun. Therefore, it is necessary to estimate the seakeeping characteristics of floating objects carrying a photovoltaic system and afterwards estimate the solar radiation. For this purpose, the traditional seakeeping model is updated with a model of connections that exist between floating bodies carrying photovoltaic panels. A closed-form expression is derived that can be used for initial estimates of the relative value of radiation reduction due to photovoltaic panel movement. The expression is much easier to use compared to estimates based on time-domain simulations. In case studies, the developed models are presented on a conventional merchant ship and interconnected floating pontoons.
