Human-Animal Comparisons in Adults and Children: Impediments and Potentials for the Animal Ethics Education in Paulo Freire

The anthropocentric philosophical anthropology of Paulo Freire at the first glance does not offer any incentives for approaching non-human animals differently than as a binary opposition in comparisons to human beings. The need for stressing certain qualities present in human beings thus leads to denying certain qualities that animals do or may have. For example, Freire comes to the conclusion that animal nature is the same in the natural habitat and in captivity. Ethical consequences of this approach can thus lead to oppressive practices toward non-human animals. Exactly because Freire would not allow this, following his clear stance on animal ethics and the non-narrowly-anthropocentric notion of oppression, the aim of the presentation is to find mediators between these opposite stances. The main mediator is his educational approach toward children, which is reflected in the imperative for adults to be more childlike in the mission of liberation of the oppressed (by enabling them to liberate themselves). These childlike qualities are the joy of living, curiosity, i.e. delight in questioning, restlessness, desire to grow, to be creative, to bring about change, etc. Having those qualities, the children in general have a stronger disposition than adults to comparisons which are (both morally and cognitively) more in the favor than at the expense of non-human animals.
