Demand for sport and recreational activities: a case study of domestic tourists

According to many survey results, sport, recreational and leisure time activities are becoming more and more important for tourists during their short or longer holidays. Therefore, sport activities are focus of creating various tourism products and many destinations are trying to position and differential themselves with the offer of special activities. Croatia, as a tourism destination attracts tourists primarily because of the beauty of its landscape and clean sea but besides nautical tourism that is growing, there is a big potential to create many more products based on various sport and recreational activities. According to the results of continuous visitors survey, tourists in Croatia are becoming more active, participating in more sport and recreational activities but at the same time not satisfied with the overall sport opportunities. These results indicated the need for this study with the main objective to investigate the willingness and preference of domestic tourist to participate in sport and recreational activities. One of the aims was also to investigate if there are differences in engagement in sport and recreational activities among tree groups: visitors on one-day trips, tourists on excursions (one to three overnights) and those who spend longer holidays (four and more overnights). The results of this study could help destination managers and planners to better use existing tourism demand for new sport and recreational activities and to be more efficient in attracting investitures and local government to plan new amenity and recreational areas.
