Proteomic characterization of feline obesity
Obesity has become a global problem and a huge healthcare concern of the 21st century, reducing the quality and length of life of humans and animals by increasing morbidity and mortality. As in humans, feline overweight and obesity have become a rising problem with a prevalence ranging between 19 - 52 %. A total of 6 healthy lean cats and 12 naturally occurring overweight and obese cats, of which 6 metabolically healthy and 6 metabolically unhealthy were included in the study. Among the group of cats, 11 proteins were detected as significantly differentially expressed. The present study extends the knowledge on feline obesity and on the development of its related disorders, highlights similarities compared with human obesity, and may help in revealing the new biomarkers in early diagnosis and obesity control using cats as a model.
