Compatibility of Transformer Materials with Insulating Liquids

Compatibility studies of materials with insulating liquids is a compulsory step in the design of liquid filled electrical equipment, e.g. transformers, reactors, bushings and similar equipment [1]. The changes in the insulating liquid to the new stage, as well as its influence on the tested material shall be evaluated. There are only a few adequate international established standard procedures, describing the testing methodology to a certain extent [2, 3], however, without providing of limit values. An incompatible material may have a detrimental influence on the dielectric properties of a liquid, thus jeopardizing its service or producing fault gases interfering with the Gas-in-Oil (DGA) interpretation. Its mechanical and/or dielectric properties can be strongly reduced, thus leading to a much shorter life span than expected. Testing procedures and pass/fail criteria are urgently necessary for the evaluation of materials not only in mineral oil, but also in other insulating liquids on the market like synthetic and natural ester, synthetic liquids, silicones etc. Proposal for the testing ratios of materials with insulating liquids, as well as limit acceptable values for those materials are presented and discussed in the paper. This methodology can be extended on further construction materials. This experience is based on a long term experience of a big transformer manufacturer.
