Changes of supragingival biofilm during orthodontic treatment with fixed orthodontic appliance and use of fluorides

Background: For decreasing of white spot lesions during ortodontic treatment using of high concetration of fluorides is recommended. Objectives: To analyse influence of fluorides on dental biofilm profile during treatment with fixed ortodontic appliance. Subjects and methods: Sample consisted of 37 subjects in orthodontic treatment with fixed orthodontic appliance aged 12-22 years (17 used gel with high concentration of fluorides daily for one mounth and 20 were controls). For analysis of changes in bacterial biofilm composition for Veillonella parvula, Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Streptococcus salivarius, sobrinus and mutans species real time polymerase chain reaction was used. Results: Orthodontic tratment with fixed orthodontic appliance when practicing regular oral hygiene increased Streptococcus mutans (26.6x), Veillonella parvula (3.5x), Streptococcus salivarius (3.3x), Streptococcus sobrinus (2.5x) and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (2x). Use of fluorides reduced Streptococcus sobrinus (1.3x) and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (1.4x). In comparison to control group there was less increase of Streptococcus mutans (3.2x) and Veillonella parvula (1.8x), while Streptococcus salivarius increased 7.8x. Conclusion: Orthodontic treatment with fixed metal appliance increase cariogenic bacteria S. mutans, which was best controlled by fluorides.
