Temporal changes in Ba/Cashell of Venus verrucosa from Kaštela Bay and Boka Kotorska Bay (Adriatic Sea)

Investigation of the geochemical composition of bivalve shells can provide information on changes in the marine environment occurring during the lifespan of an organism. Target of this research is commercially important species Venus verrucosa, which has a lifespan of more than 16 years. Samples were collected alive by SCUBA diving from anthropogenically influenced Kaštela Bay (Croatia) and Boka Kotorska Bay (Montenegro), both located in the Eastern Adriatic Sea. From each location, 5 specimens were chosen by their length to represent an approximately 5-year interval. High temporal resolution shell Ba/Ca and Mg/Ca records were obtained by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA–ICP–MS). Major growth line form on an annual basis, but the annual growth lines typically broad and hardly visible. To overcome the problem of blurry annual growth lines, Mg/Ca peeks were used to determine the precise yearly division. In this study, we applied LA–ICP–MS in line scan mode to determine the trace element composition along the major growth axis in the hinge area of the shell. Interannual and seasonal changes in Ba/Ca were studied and compared between locations. Patterns were relatively synchronous between studied individuals from the same site suggesting potential environmental influence. However, Ba/Ca patters were less synchronous between two localities pointing to local environmental differences. Research has been supported by the Croatian Science Foundation under the project BivACME (IP- 2019-04-8542).
