Cascade utilization of food industry by-products in circular bioeconomy
The circular bioeconomy is gaining attention as a means to address climate change and waste management. Biorefineries enable the circular bioeconomy. They involve industrial processes that produce multiple value-added products, fuels, and chemicals from different feedstocks. They are being developed in response to the instability of the petrochemical industry and in response to concerns about sustainable energy development and climate change. By-products of the food industry are lignocellulosic materials. They are mostly used directly or indirectly as feed or as a bioenergy source, but there is also a growing interest in using them for the production of high- value chemicals and biomaterials within the biorefinery concept. In this work, the chemical composition of typical representatives of food industry byproducts is presented. The methods used to produce a variety of biobased products from food industry byproducts are presented and critically evaluated from a sustainability perspective. Current data on industrial, pilot and R&D plants used in Europe for the production of a variety of biobased products from different food industry by-products are presented.
