PSYCHOSOCIAL EFFECTS OF GAMBLING TREATMENT IN THE DAILY CLINIC FOR GAMBLING ADDICTION

The Republic of Croatia has only one specialized Daily Clinic for Gambling Addiction, located in Zagreb (the capital). It represents a unique 3 months semi-structured and intensive multidimensional and multidisciplinary approach through the professional work of specialized psychiatrist, social pedagogue, social worker, occupational therapist and a nurse. They provide different treatment interventions that include individual and group psychotherapy, socioemotional skills training, family therapy, support groups etc. Together with the scientists from the University of Zagreb (Faculty of Education and Rehabilitation Sciences), Clinic is conducting a scientific evaluation project aimed at identifying the outcomes of this semi-structured treatment. This presentation will focus on the results conducted with N=315 patients (Mage=32.6 ; M=93% ; F=7%) who were in treatment in this Daily Clinic between December 2017 and December 2021. The aim of this presentation is to assess a wide range of psychosocial effects after the treatment, in terms of gambling-related symptoms, cognitive functioning, socio-emotional skills, consumption of psychoactive substances, and relationships with important social networks (romantic and family relationships, relationships with friends and those in business environment). Results indicate a significant increase in the general psychosocial functioning of gambling addicts after the 3-month treatment, confirming the positive effects of this approach, but also a need for ensuring continuous after-treatment support.
