An overview of maintenance procedures for ship machinery
In recent years, the ship maintenance has significantly evolved to increase both the safety and environmental protection. Bearing in mind that the number of crew and engineers on board has been reduced drastically and that maintenance requires significant effort (manpower, time, money, etc.) the development of a maintenance plan came to be useful. Ship maintenance accounts for 20-30% of a ship’s operational costs and is related to unexpected breakdowns, repairs, loss of operational availability, and consequently revenue. Generally, maintenance procedures can be divided into corrective, preventive, condition based, and reliability centred maintenance. Preventive and condition based maintenance procedures are under continuous development by employing various tools and technological advancements aiming to detect upcoming failures before they occur thus increasing reliability and reducing costs. This paper brings out an overview of recent developments in maintenance procedures and outlines their advantages and drawbacks.
